Heaney Reading "The Grauballe Man" - BBC: Northern Ireland Poets

Re: reference to "the dying Gaul" in Heaney's poem,
"The Grauballe Man"

The "Dying Gaul" depicts a wounded Celtic warrior who lies upon the earth awaiting death. This statue from Pergamon in modern Turkey may be a Roman copy of a third-century BC bronze statue, or it may be the original. It commemorates a Hellenistic victory over the Galatians, Celtic settlers who had invaded Asia Minor in 239 B.C. The moustache, matted hair and twisted collar identify the warrior as a barbarian. (Edited copy from the Encyclopedia Romana and Sculpture Gallery.)
